Pancake Day 2023Pancake Day 2023 is Tuesday Feb 21st.  Pancake Day is also known as Shrove Tuesday, and the day is celebrated by many people all around the world. For Christians it is the day before Ash Wednesday when Lent starts.  It is a different date each year but it usually occurs in February or March.

Pancake Day is a fun time at home but that can be shared in school as well, especially in the early years when making pancakes is fun with friends. Children can measure the ingredients and take turns flipping the pancakes as well as decorating them with different toppings. The pancakes could have many different fillings such as fruit, like bananas or strawberries, chocolate spread or syrup, or the more traditional lemon and sugar, a great way to introduce children to unusual flavours!  You could even have class pancake races.

For older children, understanding the religious significance may be more relevant. The day became known as Pancake Day because making pancakes was a way for people to use up ingredients like sugar, butter, and eggs before the fasting period of Lent. Lent is when some Christians fast, or cut out luxuries, There is a useful paragraph to explain the lent fast on this page.  Four weeks after Shrove Tuesday it is Easter! Easter is a time for rebirth, and new life – hence the Easter Bunny and chicks.

Children could investigate pancakes in other countries, they are a popular food worldwide; for example in France, they’re called crêpes, while in Russia they’re called blinis.
