Stem Resources are to be found everywhere but STEM Learning has gathered many lessons and activity ideas together in one place that will be useful to schools trying to incorporate the STEM subjects into their curriculum.
The website is split into sections based on different sectors and different subjects and it is easy to search for primary resources based on maths, science, D&T, engineering or computing using their quick search facility.
One activity that I looked at – The Lighthouse Keeper Challenge is an old favourite but there is so much provided here: the planning sheet, the challenge presentations, students notes, teachers’ notes and a challenge handout!
“This challenge provides a STEM activity day in which teams of children work together to design a way of getting lighthouse keepers back to the mainland from a lighthouse based on a small island 200 metres from the nearest land. The design will need to use a zip line to carry the keeper safely across the waves which can be high during storms. The teams will need to think about how to warn people the keeper is transferring to the mainland or that the transfer system is being returned to the lighthouse and how it could operate safely in dark and stormy conditions. Their prototype must include at least one electric circuit.” (STEM Learning)
This is presented as a one day STEM event but it could be split up int smaller sections for a lunchtime, or after school club. The challenge covers all aspects of STEM learning and is suitable for ages 7 – 11.
‘Movies and Magic’ is another interesting looking project: “Sometimes what looks like magic is actually science! In this programme, pupils will look at magic and movie tricks for inspiration and find out how it’s done. They explore how things are done to make movies look realistic, and investigate whether some of the themes or technology from the movies could be possible in real life.” (STEM Learning)
There are many great STEM resources gathered together here but they are not all in combined subjects, there are also individual set of resources for maths, science, computing, etc!
