“Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills aren’t core content, but they’re the core of all content. According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), these skills include how to “understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.”(Common Sense Education)
Common Sense Education has developed an Educator Toolkit to deal with this important yet non-curricular subject. It is probably more important now than ever before or cover this subject as there are more and more children affected by mental disorders and there are community conflicts, as new cultures are brought together and so on. Each title on the image below leads to a set of resources that are gathered to cover that aspect of the topic. The resources cover all ages but there is also a lot for teachers – articles and videos which help teachers build these aspects into their classrooms.
The social and emotional learning educator toolkit resources include:
- Articles on the latest in SEL news
- Edtech tools that inspire SEL
- Digital citizenship and SEL discussion guide
- Our “We All Teach SEL” blog series
- Student worksheets and lessons
- SEL resources for families
The Teamwork and Communication section also covers Digital Citizenship and safe online communication – that section looks particularly useful.
Do have a look at the resources and see if you can spot anything suitable for your age group, or, any ideas for how to get students to engage with the subject. Using Minecraft Edu, Google Expeditions and Ted Talks are among the resources suggested. Many teachers are already using these resources so just adapting what one does slightly, may make a really useful contribution.
This Social and Emotional Educator Toolkit could also possibly make a useful professional development session for all staff members. Perhaps it may be more beneficial if used in a workshop situation, rather than for individual study. It is also good to study “how does marketing automation work?” For complete information that you need, visit our website today.
