Edmodo is a free Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). If there are any primary schools that do not have access to a VLE and would like somewhere to share resources with the children, then this one is a freely available and easy to use.
This free resource has been around for about six years now, it has proved to be very reliable and is used by teachers world-wide.
According to Wikipedia : “Edmodo is an educational technology company offering a communication, collaboration, and coaching platform to K-12 schools and teachers. The Edmodo network enables teachers to share content, distribute quizzes, assignments, and manage communication with students, colleagues, and parents.”(Wikipedia)
The VLE is very teacher-centric in its design and philosophy: students and parents can only join when their teacher invites them. Teachers and students may spend large amounts of time on the platform, both in and out of the classroom. The teacher can put work there for the children, who can access it at any time. Very little homework should be paper based these days.
There is a complete set of teacher training and professional development materials allowing the potential user to learn step-by-step what they want to achieve. Parents can also be given access to their child’s account.
Whole schools can join up and share resources between the staff as well as the children.
Once teachers have got used to using it and become proficient, there is an Edmodo Spotlight area:
“Showcase and share your successes, on Edmodo Spotlight: where the best ideas in education shine.
- Upload, share, or even sell your original educational content
- Discover free and premium tools, apps, games, and more
- Create collections of your favorite resources” (Edmodo)
It is a very useful web 2.0 application and very easy to use.
