ChatGPT is being mentioned everywhere, on social media, in the news, etc. It is an Artificial Intelligence chatbot. I wondered if it had any use in education and was astounded at how accurate and inspiring it is – I asked it about online safety, then about how children may use it, then – thinking of teachers – asked it for some story starters. Today I asked it to create a story for me – then finally add a twist! I absolutely love the responses and would recommend that everyone explores it. Here are my “conversations” the chatbot answers are blue:

Ideas for engaging children in using the internet safely

Here are a few ideas for engaging children in using the internet safely:

  1. Start a conversation about internet safety early on. It’s important to discuss the potential risks and dangers of using the internet with children as they begin to use it more independently.
  2. Set clear rules and boundaries for internet use. This might include setting limits on screen time, establishing rules around what sites can be visited, and having open and honest communication about any concerns or questions.
  3. Educate children about online privacy and security. Teach children about the importance of keeping personal information private, such as their name, address, and phone number, and how to create strong passwords.
  4. Encourage children to be kind online. Remind children that their words and actions online can have a big impact on others and encourage them to be respectful and considerate of others when interacting online.
  5. Use parental controls and other tools to help protect children online. There are many tools and resources available, such as web filters and monitoring software, that can help parents protect their children online.
  6. Keep the lines of communication open. Encourage children to come to you with any concerns or questions they have about the internet, and be open to discussing these issues with them.

Would creating an acceptable use policy (AUP) with children help them use technology safely?
An acceptable use policy (AUP) is a document that outlines the rules and guidelines for using technology responsibly. Creating an AUP with children can be a helpful way to engage them in the conversation about internet safety and help them understand the importance of using technology responsibly.

An AUP can include guidelines for how children should use technology at home, at school, or in other settings. It can cover topics such as appropriate online behavior, the consequences for misusing technology, and how to report any inappropriate or concerning content.

Having an AUP in place can help children understand the expectations for using technology and can serve as a helpful reference when they have questions about what is appropriate. It can also provide a clear set of consequences for misusing technology, which can help deter children from engaging in risky or harmful online behaviors.

Overall, an AUP can be a useful tool for helping children use technology safely and responsibly. It’s important to involve children in the process of creating the AUP and to make sure they understand and agree to the rules and guidelines outlined in the document.

a story about kindness called Doug the cat

Once upon a time, there was a cat named Doug. Doug was a kind and curious cat who loved to explore the world around him. He spent his days wandering the streets of his neighborhood, saying hello to the other animals and humans he met along the way.

One day, as Doug was exploring, he came across a small mouse who was lost and alone. The mouse was shivering and scared, and Doug knew that he had to help. He gently approached the mouse and said, “Hello there, little mouse. Are you lost? Don’t be afraid, I’ll help you find your way home.”

The mouse was so grateful for Doug’s kindness and followed him as he led her back to her home. Along the way, Doug taught the mouse about the different sights and sounds of their neighborhood, and even showed her some of his favorite spots to explore.

When they finally arrived at the mouse’s home, her family was overjoyed to see her safe and sound. They thanked Doug for his kindness and invited him to stay for a nice bowl of cheese. From that day on, Doug and the mouse became the best of friends, and Doug was known throughout the neighborhood as the kind and helpful cat.

Doug’s act of kindness not only helped the mouse, it also inspired others to be kind as well. Doug’s simple act of helping a lost mouse and showing her around made her happy and her family too. His kind heart had a ripple effect, spreading kindness throughout the community.

The end.
