Earth Day is April 22Earth day is  on April the 22nd and WideOpenSchool has gathered a set of resources ready for use in schools.

Use these free activities to help kids explore our planet, learn about global challenges, think of solutions, and take action.” (Wide Open School)

The resources are divided by age but many resources are added for all ages so some of them will be adaptable for any aged group of children.

The resources include:

  • Powered by Poop
  • Biodegradable Party
  • Learn to Recycle
  • Kids Vs Plastic
  • Nature Notebook
  • Be like a Hummingbird
  • Bioturbation in Action
  • Edible Water Bottles
  • Niagara Falls
  • What’s your favourite season?
  • Kid Heroes for the Planet
  • Eliminating Single Use Plastics
  • Amazon Rain Forest
  • The Future Forest is made of Plastic
  • Flip-Flop Sculptures
  • Mushroom at Work
  • Green Roofs
  • Edible Water Bottles

All of these resources are gathered as a set of links; they are gathered from TimeKids, National Geographic, the BBC and more places. There is some fascinating material. I love Flip-flop Sculptures it is just amazing to see what people are doing with waste flip flops and it may inspire children to look at waste products differently.

Kids vs Plastic has lots of ideas for children to think about such as plastic free parties, plastic free snacking and plastic free summer fun. There is a whole set of videos to encourage children to go plastic free where they can. There is so much just on this one site alone it could make a whole project!

Earth Day is April 22 it would be great to include something in the curriculum on the day if possible even if it is only the flip-flop video just to remind children of environmental issues as they unwrap their cling-film wrapped lunch!
