New British Red Cross Resources Pack has been made available to encourage the practice of kindness. It was designed for the last month of this year but would work equally as well in January – in fact with New Year Resolutions, it would be a great starter for January. Children could prepare it now before they break up to start it in the New Year. It is suitable for 5 – 11 year olds and is a quick activity. The pack is a blank calendar and children fill in their act of kindness for each day, there are lots of ideas included in the pack.
There are lots of ideas to explore kindness and friendship, all based around the story of the Snowman and the Snow dog, a story children will already be familiar with. There are references to things that have happened this year, the NHS rainbows and Captain Tom. There is also a friendship snowflake template that would be great for a classroom display. The whole pack is rather wonderful.
“Our new kindness calendar includes a range of fun activities featuring our friends The Snowman and The Snowdog. The beloved characters will help children (ages 5-11) learn about kindness, the importance of having connections and friendships with others and how to cope with change. “ (British Red Cross)
There is a second set of new British Red Cross Resources, for aged 7 upwards called Tackling loneliness.
“Anyone can feel lonely, but our research shows that loneliness can badly affect young people. In response, we’ve developed a set of resources in partnership with the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport for educators to use with young learners.” (British Red Cross)
The activities included make use of animated films, illustrated characters, videos, podcasts and music to explore the topic of loneliness with children.
