If you are covering  the Human body for KS 1, there is a lovely section of the new BBC Bitesize offering three informative videos.

Under the Science for KS1 there are three learner guides covering the Human Body. The first is:

What are the parts of the body?

There are transcripts for the videos, they provide straightforward facts and are simple enough for children to understand:

“And your skull acts as a tough shell for your brain.

Keeping everything safely wrapped up, is your skin.

Most of us have the same kind of body parts in the same places.

You have a head and neck.

You have arms, elbows, hands and fingers.

You have a chest and a tummy.

You have legs, knees, feet and toes.”

The above sample was taken from the video transcript for What are the parts of the body?  There is a short video, followed by a drag and drop exercise where children name the head, arms, hands and toes.

What do humans need to stay healthy?

This video talks about food, exercise, keeping clean and the importance of sleep.  It is only short and children should not get bored. There is also an interactive food image where children click the various foods to find out the properties of that particular food healthwise.

What are the senses?

This is a video covering the senses in turn. Each one is described in child friendly language, they are well made. The drag and drop exercise that follows will test whether the children know the functions of the senses.

These videos are a lovely way of starting to cover the Human body for KS 1; they not only deal with what the body does, such as the eyes seeing, they also add information about when people may need a little help such as with wearing glasses. This offering from BBC Bitesize is far more inclusive than resources have been in the past.
