Vintage Images Collection
The British Library have shared a whole set of Vintage Images, on flickr. Many of these images were taken from old picture books, which may be particularly interesting to schools. Others, which may be equally appealing, come from newspapers, photographs, etc.
The images have been shared as they are all too old for copyright and therefore eligible to come into the public domain. There is a massive collection of over one million pictures that can be freely used in schools.
The images could be used to inspire story or poem writing:
To illustrate topics:
Or, to develop descriptive writing:
There are many free images shared on the web but these are free to use in any way you want to.
How to find free to use Images
Just as a reminder, never use a Google Images search without first making sure that you can use the images in any way that you need to, you could easily be breaking the law! This country does not have a fair use agreement, the images are either free to use, or they are copyright.
Should you not want to use the British Library Collection, mentioned above, but still want a free to use image – one which you can use any time, any where – go to Google Images, click on the cog on the right hand side ( on some browsers, click on settings at the bottom of the page):
Choose Advanced search and scroll down to select a licence:
Free to use, share or modify will be great for use in class, teacher and children can use the images in any way they want to.
