Sir Francis Drake, was an English vice-admiral, born in Devon about 1540. He was a privateer, navigator and politician during the Elizabethan era. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588.
Drake carried out the second circumnavigation of the world in a single expedition, from 1577 to 1580. In 1581 Elizabeth I of England awarded Drake a knighthood. He died in 1596.
