1-Story Bird Banner_1The Storybird website is a free story making resource which welcomes educational establishments to sign up. Storybirds are short, art-inspired stories that children make very quickly and easily inspire success. Authors can share them with each other, read them together or print them off to make a new library of their own work.

There are some amazing examples of the stories that children have made: These are 5 – 7 year old stories and 8 – 12 year old stories.

Children can add their own art to add to their stories. If they need inspiration they can use pictures from the huge library of shared resources available to them. This is just a few of the newest images to the artwork library:

Storybird is a unique language arts tool. We use illustrations to inspire students to write stories: picture books for K-5, longform chapter books for Grades 5-9, and poetry for everything in-between.” (Storybird Website)

To make a storybird book, first choose which photos you want to include in your book.  Once you have chosen, add them to your book then add your story text.

Storybird can also be used to create poetry like the one below( just click the picture to follow the link to this poem on the  website):

Children’s artwork can also be made into beautiful, saleable cards with envelopes; this could be a possibility for fund raising at Christmas. If Storybird is used as a fund raiser they will contribute 30% of the proceeds. Books can also be purchased which would be a lovely prize for a story writing competition.

To be a member, a child must be 13 years old but there is provision for schools to add classes and it is great for younger children. For younger children to become members at home they have to add a parental email address. Why not give it a whirl?
