Unfortunately, a head teacher at one of our schools had her laptop stolen during a house robbery. Fortunately, the laptop was encrypted making the sensitive data on the laptop secure. This has prompted us to look at offering laptop encryption as a service to our schools.
We always think carefully about what ICT services primary schools actually need and our advice is to consider encrypting head teachers and SEN laptops. The following report in The Guardian provides a worst case scenario and while we do not want to be alarmist, we feel it highlights the potential data protection issues involved.
