School ICT to be replaced by computer science programme

The current programme of information and communications technology (ICT) study in England’s schools will be scrapped from September 2012, the education secretary has announced – BBC link

In our opinion, this is long over due. As IT professionals, we have long held the opinion that a lot of the ICT we have observed in schools was dull and not pro-actively creating the IT specialists of the future. The current ICT curriculum is too vague for teachers to  plan effectively for and doesn’t engage pupils in the way IT does outside of school. The particular frustration of 11-18 year olds with ICT has been all too evident for far too long.

Most of us at 123ICT have backgrounds in computer programming and we are looking forward to seeing how this develops over the next few years and in particular the impact it will have on the primary school curriculum. We look forward to finding out more at BETT 2012 this week.
