Every year LitWorld calls global attention to the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories. They utilise the combined power of children’s own stories, access to diverse reading and writing experiences – plus peer to peer and adult mentor relationships to improve literacy. They started this project in 2010 and have taken it to 25 countries encouraging literacy on each continent. Over eighteen million people have been involved in the project so far and it continues to expand.

World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words and creates a community of readers taking action to show the world that the right to literacy belongs to all people….

LitWorld is a non-profit organisation aiming at creating a permanent positive change in the world. They state:  “We implement on-the-ground innovative solutions to the hard-to-tackle challenge of illiteracy worldwide.” (LitWorld)

It is a shame that this event falls during half term holiday for many schools. Perhaps, the activities could be adopted after the holiday.
