Fact Monster is an American site, created by the US Government, with a huge range of educational information for children.
The site contains a dictionary, encyclopaedia, thesaurus and an atlas. Particularity interesting are the ‘This day in history’ and the ‘People’ sections, such as ‘People at a Glance’. The information provided is impressive and served in very small chunks such as:
- “People have lived in the world for millions of years. Today, 6.3 billion people live on the earth.
- The world’s population grows by 100 million each year. Some 950 million people in the world are malnourished.
- There are 106 boys born for every 100 girls.” (Fact Monster)
Fact Monster contains dozens of biographies, all short and in easy to understand language. There are also statistics from many countries, information on natural disasters and a current events section that shows events for each year from 1900 until the present. Also included are timelines that cover great swathes of history up to and including IS! If not useful for learners it may be very useful for teachers trying to keep up with current events. The homework section is full of curricular help and has many quizzes, crosswords and games, as well as information articles. The site has been designed to make learning fun. It contains a record of natural disasters and major accidents the world over. There is also a video archive but sadly that is not available in the UK.
